How does the EMOTH tool contribute to achieving the aim of the consultation?

EMOTH can be used to make visible and foster discussion of individuals’ and families’ emotional experiences in their homes. Such visual representations of experience and discussions with a professional can trigger changes in family members’ everyday communication, recurring activity, and the development of family relationships.

The display of an emotional map using EMOTH cards also engages visuality in the process of understanding. In this way, EMOTH makes the consultation experiential for both family members and professionals.

Who can successfully use the EMOTH therapeutic tool?

Helping professionals, working with couples, families, and individuals, family and couples therapists, systemic practitioners, psychotherapists, psychologists, social workers, mental health professionals, developmental educators, and other helping professionals.

What types of consultations can the EMOTH tool be used for?

Family counseling and family therapy with adult family members and school-age children; adolescent counseling; parent counseling; couple therapy; systemic individual counseling and therapy; mental health counseling and other counseling with children and adults of school age or older.

HOW TO USE EMOTH

Follow the steps:

  1. Build the layout of the home using the room cards. Use the furniture pieces to furnish the home. Family members build their own maps or they can work together on a shared map.
  2. Find the places of emotional experiences and place the experience markers.
  3. Participants interpret the emotional map together with the professional. Engage in interviewing using question cards. Use also the pawns representing the family members.
  4. Specific life situations and relationship patterns can be explored by moving the experience markers and the pawns.

In individual consultations, the emotional experiences at home can be explored and interpreted similarly.

Family members can be represented on the map by pawns.

ABOUT US: sallay&MArtos

EMOTH: the beginnings

We are Dr. Viola Sallay and Dr. Tamás Martos, a psychologist couple, both family therapists, university researchers - and the developers of the EMOTH therapeutic procedure. At the Relationship Science Research Lab, we have conducted a series of interviews over the past years using the Emotional Map Of The Home (EMOTH) procedure. The emotional maps of the home and the participants' stories revealed that the Emotional Map Of The Home interview has therapeutic significance (read about the research here). Therefore, we translated the research experience into the counseling field and created the first version of the EMOTH systemic therapy procedure, which we have been using effectively in couple and family therapy consultations for many years.

EMOTH: from therapeutic procedure to therapeutic tool

Until now, no therapeutic tool has been available to apply this method. The family members drew the floor plan of their home by hand and marked their experiences, which took up a significant amount of consultation time, and there was no option to track the changes.

At this point, Emma Szlabey, a graphic designer, joined our team. Combining the therapeutic and design aspects, we created a toolkit that allows EMOTH to be used quickly and effectively.

Thanks to its careful design, the therapeutic tool provides a visual experience, invites participants to construct together, and can be used flexibly to visualize home spaces and experiences.
